How Much Does it Cost to Build a House?

While buying a pre-existing home is usually less expensive than building one of the homes in Ridgefield WA, it may not be that much of a difference if the existing home you buy doesn’t meet your needs. Once you add in renovations, redecorating, or any big plumbing or electrical changes, that existing home becomes much more expensive. Why not start with a home that already fits your lifestyle!

Of course, there are costs involved in building that you can’t put off, the way you could with a home remodel. The cost of the land and any preparatory work that needs to be done is a significant part of the overall cost. However, the amount can vary dramatically depending on where you are purchasing the land. The average cost of land in the United States is $3,160 per acre, but the closer you are to a city, the higher the cost will be, sometimes up to more than $500,000 per acre in urban areas. However, if you’re not looking for a full acre, the cost will obviously drop if you choose a smaller lot. Washington land is fairly expensive, but Ridgefield real estate has also seen excellent appreciation numbers over the past ten years, putting it in the top 20% in the country.

Separate from the cost of the land is the cost of the actual construction. The National Association of Home Builders puts the average cost of construction for a single-family home at roughly $300,000. This is an average, though, as material and labor costs vary depending on location. In fact, labor and materials account for roughly 60% of the total cost of new construction.

There are also additional costs that come in the form of decor elements, including curtains and rods, bathroom mirrors, toilet roll holders, and a variety of smaller items that can easily add up. Some recommend multiplying your budget by 1.5 to help ensure there’s enough in the budget to cover any unexpected costs or special elements you may want to add to your home to make it more personal.
