The first day of winter is just one week away. Here are some helpful tips from our construction team to prepare for wintery conditions:
1) Remember to remove all hoses from the exterior hose bibs, if you don’t and it freezes you will have problems. Frost free hose bibs are what we use and by removing the hoses it allows the spigot to drain thus not freezing.
2) Ideally gutters need to be cleaned twice a year to prevent the downspouts from being clogged and resulting in water overflowing the gutters.
3) Check all caulking on the exterior, such as around windows and doors and around the corners of the house. Caulking is subjected to seasonal stresses and therefore can lead to failures. Avoiding water intrusion points is paramount to maintaining a dry house.
4) In the event of a freezing rain storm, make sure that all weep holes have the ice removed, so as the ice has a way out as it begins to thaw.
5) It is important to maintain the smoke detectors with new batteries once a year to ensure they will properly function when needed.
