Known as the oldest settlement west of the Mississippi River, Vancouver is named for the Hudson Bay fur trading fort that settled here in 1824. Today, the Fort Vancouver National Historical Site is home to the second largest fireworks display every July 4 th, as well as home to an interpretive center.

There is plenty of history, but also a lot of contemporary, including newly finished downtown library, summertime farmer’s markets, recreation on Vancouver Lake and a well-loved walking trail that stretches for miles along the Columbia River.

Being just across the river from Portland, Oregon, commute times are easy – Vancouverites can make it to downtown Portland or to the Portland Airport within 20 minutes.
